Celebrate the festive season with unmissable events, shopping and experiences
With 60 log cabins and other seasonal stalls, decorated with fairy lights, traders from the South West and beyond sell everything from handmade jewellery and clothing to artwork and homewares. You can even pick up a Christmas tree.
Some of the region's favourite food and drink traders will also be returning to The Market, including smoked cheese and meats, spirits and liqueurs, and fudge. Pick up unique gifts for friends and family, with everything from handmade jewellery and artwork to sweet treats to choose from. Warm-up with a mulled wine from the Bavarian Bar, tuck into festive food from one of the many street food stands and snap a festive selfie in front of the giant illuminated bauble.
With entertainment including gospel choirs and vintage vocalists, your visit to the Christmas market will certainly put you in the festive spirit!
The Plymouth Christmas Market will be held from Thursday 28th November until 19th December 2019
Completely rebuilt after the Second World War and primarily pedestrianised in the early 1990s, Plymouth is traditionally the leading shopping centre of the South West. The Plymouth shopping experience is a mix of big-name brands and unique independent shops. With such a wide variety, there really is no need to go anywhere else.
Plymouth's premier shopping venue is Drake Circus, which has more than 70 stores all under cover. During the late-night shopping season, the shops and eateries are open until 9pm and the car park remains open until midnight for a flat fee (in 2018 this was £4). With everything from real snow, local choir performances and Santa's grotto, Drake Circus has everything you'd expect at Christmas and more!
The Christmas Light Switch On, on Armada Way, marks the start of late-night shopping on Thursday 14th November 2019.
Head to the Barbican on Sunday 1st December 2019 from midday until 6pm for the annual Christmas Lights Switch On, featuring family-friendly entertainment, free activities and some very special guests.
Watch out from 2.30pm, as everyone’s favourite festive anti-hero, the Grinch, and partner Martha May Whovier, will be roaming the streets – and they’re likely to be looking for trouble! And be on the lookout as you also might just spot some Elf Stiltwalkers roaming around.
Turning on the lights this year is Father Christmas himself, who will arrive at Cap’n Jaspers at 4.30pm on the RNLI lifeboat. At 5pm, he’ll be helped by the Lord Mayor to switch on the Barbican’s Christmas Lights from the top of an open-top bus, provided by Citybus, on Southside Street.
Get into the Christmas spirit with the Barbican Christmas Light Switch On, taking place on Sunday 1st December 2019.
Taking place on Sunday 15th December 2019 the Tavistock Christmas Festival can be found in Butchers Hall and Pannier Market. It is a fun day out for all the family and is a chance to pick up those last-minute gifts. There will be music from local choirs, street food, mulled wine and performances. With over 60 artisans, food and gift exhibitors, plus free entry too.
What is more traditional than a Christmas panto? At the Theatre Royal, you'll find Brian Connally as Buttons in Cinderella. You and the family shall go to the ball, packed with all the pantomime ingredients you have come to expect from Plymouth's biggest festive production. Cinderella will feature a star casting, laugh out loud comedy, jaw-dropping special effects, stunning songs and dance routines and plenty of boos and hisses.
