The British Firework Championships or National Firework Championships is an annual competition held in Plymouth every August where judges review fireworks display from professional fireworks companies. 

The Plymouth Sound will be illuminated as six top firework companies will battle it out over two nights.  They will be putting on an impressive ten-minute display of spectacular pyrotechnics, in the attempt to be crowned the British Fireworks Championship Winner. 

Plymouth Fireworks World Championships

Every year it is watched by more than 200,000 people visiting Plymouth. It was first held in 1997.  The British Fireworks Championship rules place restrictions on budget, duration and the amount of ordinance that can be used for each display – who know it would be so technical?!

Plymouth is the perfect choice to hold the championships every year.  It has a natural amphitheatre where the pyrotechnics can be used safely.  Plus, the display can be watched from a variety of points on the Plymouth Hoe, Plymouth Sound and the harbour. 

An extra special title will be up for grabs this year with the ‘Champion of Champions’ contest, where the last six years of winners return to compete for the ultimate accolade.

What time does the British Fireworks Championship start?

Free entertainment starts from 2pm with music, fairground rides and lots of family-friendly fun on Plymouth Hoe. The firework displays generally begin on each evening as dusk falls at 9.30pm. Spectators are advised to arrive early to get the best possible vantage point and perfect viewing platform for this awe-inspiring competition.

With the dazzling displays being fired from the Mount Batten breakwater, the prime locations to view the event will be either from the Citadel or on the Plymouth Hoe. Another popular viewing point is the Jennycliff area behind Mount Batten.
