A Guide to Hiring Wedding Professionals

One of the most challenging things about getting married is finding and hiring suitable wedding suppliers. However large or small their roles may be, they will have a significant impact on the overall outcome of your wedding day.

Finding the right wedding professionals for your big day – such as venue decorators, florists, photographers, and entertainers is important. Take your time and follow some straightforward steps to ensure you are hiring quality and reputable wedding suppliers that you can trust.

As you will soon discover, there is no shortage of wedding vendors. The goal is finding the right ones for you, not only with product, service and price but with personality as well. Knowing where to look and what to look for will assist you in your search. The search can begin in several places. The following are suggestions as to where you might start.

Wedding Fayres

The greatest value in wedding fayres is the opportunity to meet with many wedding professionals in one place. You also get to view their products. Making it an invaluable tool for doing research and for gathering wedding-related information.

When you find suppliers you are interested in, make a note of it and call soon after the show to book a personal one-on-one appointment. If you have met before, it is an excellent opportunity to take advantage of on-the-day booking discounts and packages.

Venue Knowledge

Your wedding venue will have built trusted relationships with suppliers. The suppliers have worked on-site many times before and are familiar with the logistics and rules of the location. Our hotel has a list of wedding professionals we enjoy working with, as they turn up on time and do what they promised.

Friends and Family

You will usually get honest, no-nonsense answers and opinions regarding products and services when you ask married friends and family members (even co-workers) about their own weddings. Ask them about their vendors, the services they used, what they liked and didn't like, would they hire them again, etc.?

Internet and Social Media

The Internet is easy to access and use at any time. You can find a wealth of wedding suppliers on the web. Check out the website and social media channels to get an idea of pricing, packages, and the type of work they do before making a personal appointment.

Search wedding-related hashtags or local locations on social media to get an idea of what type of wedding suppliers are out there, set-ups you would like to copy from previous weddings or generally get inspiration for your big day.

Wedding Magazines

Using wedding magazines and directories can initially seem overwhelming, as there are many advertisements in these publications. You can find excellent wedding suppliers in the magazines, but it will take some calls or further internet searches to acquaint yourself with these suppliers.

Wedding Planners and Consultants

Wedding planners have several pre-established relationships with local suppliers. If you are working with one, they should be able to provide you with a preferred vendor list. However, if you are not working with a planner, you can still benefit from this knowledge. Most consultants will share their preferred vendor list if they are working on commission or for a small fee.

Hiring Wedding Professionals

Once you have made your final decisions, we strongly advise getting a written contract. A contract is the best way of ensuring you and the supplier understand what is expected. It should outline specifics such as dates, times, names, and types of services/products provided. It will also spell out payment plans, refund and cancellation policies.
