Frequently Asked Questions

Wales is known as the "Land of Song" because of its long-standing tradition of choral singing and music. Singing has been an important part of Welsh culture for centuries, with churches, chapels, schools and local choirs playing a significant role in communities. Today, Wales continues to be recognised around the world for its rich musical heritage and its passion for bringing people together through song.

While not every Welsh person can sing, music has always been deeply rooted in Welsh life. Many people grow up singing at school, in choirs, at rugby matches or during community events, helping to create a strong musical tradition. The idea that everyone in Wales can sing is a popular stereotype, but there's no denying the country's remarkable contribution to the world of music.

Yes. The national anthem of Wales is Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, which translates to Land of My Fathers. Written in the 19th century, it is proudly sung at sporting events, national celebrations and cultural occasions throughout Wales.

The anthem is traditionally sung in Welsh, even by people who do not speak the language fluently. It is one of the few national anthems regularly performed in its native language and is an important symbol of Welsh identity and pride.

An Eisteddfod is a traditional Welsh festival celebrating literature, music, performance and the arts. Visitors can enjoy choral competitions, poetry, dance, theatre and live entertainment. The National Eisteddfod, held in a different location each year, is one of Europe's largest cultural festivals and attracts thousands of competitors and spectators.

Wales hosts a wide range of cultural events throughout the year. Some of the best-known include the National Eisteddfod, the Urdd Eisteddfod, the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod, St David's Day celebrations on 1 March, and the Land of Song Festival. These events showcase Welsh music, language, heritage and creativity while welcoming visitors from around the world.

Yes. Wales has a thriving Welsh-language music scene. Popular bands and artists performing in Welsh include Super Furry Animals (who have released Welsh-language albums), Adwaith, Alffa, Yws Gwynedd and Gwilym. Their music spans indie rock, pop and alternative genres, helping to keep the Welsh language alive for new generations.

Wales has produced many internationally acclaimed female singers. Some of the most famous include Shirley Bassey, Bonnie Tyler, Charlotte Church, Katherine Jenkins and Duffy. More recent artists include Marina (formerly Marina and the Diamonds) and singer-songwriter Amy Wadge, who co-wrote Ed Sheeran's hit Thinking Out Loud. Together, they demonstrate the depth and diversity of Welsh musical talent.
