FUTURE INN BRISTOL UNVEILS AUTUMN JAZZ LINE-UP

Following a busy summer of live jazz at Bristol’s Future Inn, the venue has announced its latest line-up of gigs for the autumn season, featuring some of the UK's top artists.

Highlights include a special anniversary tribute evening to the iconic female jazz musician, Ivy Benson, whose all-female swing band rose to fame in the 1940s, on Thursday 16 October.

The evening will feature music from four surviving members of the band who once topped the bill at the London Palladium and became the BBC's Resident Dance Band in 1943.

Former band member, Claudia Colmer, 78, was one of around 300 women who worked with Ivy and toured with her across Europe throughout the years.

Claudia said: “My career wouldn’t be where it is without Ivy. She was a wonderfully charismatic woman and a truly historic figure who set the mould for classic dance band jazz – the kind that appears in the great American songbooks.

“Her All-Girls Band spanned approximately 40 years from 1939 to 1982, but it was only during wartime that it became popular for women to make a career of jazz. Ivy was unique and such a determined, glamorous person. She really stood up for women.

“Ivy would have been celebrating her 100th year, so it will be a truly fitting tribute to celebrate her life. Future Inn Bristol is such a popular venue for jazz which is still very much alive in people’s hearts in Bristol. We have an exciting line-up of classic and mainstream music.”

Further acts at Future Inn include the talented Rob Barron on 23 October, whose has previously worked alongside popular artists including Paloma Faith, Jamelia, Bryan Adams, and David Essex.

Scottish pianist and composer, Dominic Marshal, is set to cap October’s line-up of acts on Thursday 30th. Further gigs can be found at the hotel’s dedicated jazz website: www.jazzatfutureinn.co.uk

Located opposite Cabot Circus shopping area, the Chophouse Bar & Restaurant has a purpose-built space for jazz, with table seating, and food and drinks service. Guests do not need be residents at the hotel to attend.

Alicja Berthon, Manager of Bristol Future Inn, said: “We are really excited about autumn’s line-up. We’ve worked hard to attract a wide range of high quality artists from across the jazz music scene who can deliver a quality experience to music lovers.

“The Ivy Benson tribute evening in particular is something a bit different, giving long overdue recognition to a lady who broke the mould in leading her own all-female band which ran for an incredible 40 years.”

Jazz @ Future Inn Bristol is held every Thursday at the hotel’s Chophouse Restaurant and Bar, from 8.30pm. Tickets cost £5 for the evening, or £3 for students and parking is free at the hotel.
