"My dearest friends, this is your honour" Sir Winston Churchill
VE Day is on Friday 8th May 2020. It will mark 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. Years of carnage and destruction had come to an end and millions of people took to the streets and pubs to celebrate peace, mourn their loved ones and to hope for the future. The 75th anniversary will provide our nation with an opportunity to reflect on the enormous sacrifice, courage and determination of people from all walks of life.
Friday 8th May 2020 has been designated a bank holiday. To commemorate this important time there will be various VE Day Street Parties and Celebrations in Plymouth.
Join us in Fishbone Restaurant at 3pm on Friday 8th May 2020 and take part in The Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of World War 2. Pubs, bars and restaurants from all over the UK will be raising a glass to all who took part in the war.
Just before the toast, at the top of the four highest peaks in the UK, The Last Post will be played at 2.55pm. A feat never undertaken before. It will also be played at the six most widespread locations; Lands End, Lowestoft, St David's, Unst, Enniskillen Castle and the Tan Hill Inn. This will be shown on the TV screen in Fishbone Restaurant.
In association with the Royal British Legion, Plymouth will be providing an opportunity for the local community and visitors to pay tribute and celebrate the occasion.
The day starts with a commemorative service at 11am. Visit the veteran's village, see a range of preserved military vehicles and exciting displays and re-enactments and performances from The Military Wives Choir. After The Last Post, there will be a Plymouth historic tradition, with an iconic Tea Dance and big band performances.
