Ice Hockey

Plymouth Phoenix Recreational Ice Hockey Club

Ice Hockey in Plymouth

Plymouth Phoenix Recreational Ice Hockey Club is an amateur, mixed recreational ice hockey team made up of players from Plymouth and the surrounding Devon and Cornwall area. The club provides opportunities for adults to play ice hockey in a friendly, inclusive environment. It welcomes players of varying abilities who want to enjoy the sport competitively but at a recreational level. The team competes in recreational leagues and tournaments against other amateur teams across the South of England.

Although the team represents Plymouth, they currently train and play many of their games at Planet Ice Bristol. This is because Plymouth’s former ice hockey rink at Plymouth Pavilions Ice Rink closed in 2023, leaving the city without a permanent ice rink. As a result, the Plymouth Phoenix travel to Bristol and other venues for ice time while continuing to represent Plymouth’s ice hockey community.

Plymouth Ice Rink

Plymouth Pavilions was one of the few indoor venues in Devon with an ice rink, serving the local skating community for more than 30 years before it closed in January 2023. While the rink wasn’t large enough to host full ice hockey matches, it was an important training space for local teams, figure skaters and recreational skaters. It regularly hosted public sessions too, giving families and beginners a chance to enjoy the ice regardless of their ability.

Beyond the rink, the venue has long been a major entertainment hub for the city, hosting live music, stand-up comedy and touring musical theatre productions. The arena was also home to the Plymouth Raiders, who competed in the British Basketball League.

Following the rink’s closure, local skaters and ice hockey players have been campaigning for a new permanent ice facility in Plymouth. A petition has been launched to support the development of a rink suitable for competitive ice hockey, with local teams hoping that one day they will be able to play in their home city again - in front of friends, family and a true home crowd.
