Frequently Asked Questions

Bonfire Night in Plymouth takes place on Wednesday 5 November 2025, following the traditional date that marks Guy Fawkes Night across the UK.

The main Plymouth Bonfire Night celebrations are held on The Hoe, with entertainment typically starting from around 4pm, the bonfire lit at 7pm, and fireworks beginning at 7.30pm. It’s a free, family-friendly event that draws large crowds, so arriving early is recommended.

Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, is a British tradition held every 5 November. It commemorates the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. The night is marked with bonfires, fireworks, and sometimes effigies (known as ‘guys’) being burned on the fire.

The UK celebrates Bonfire Night to remember the foiling of the Gunpowder Plot, a plan to assassinate King James I and restore a Catholic monarch to the throne. The celebration began as a day of thanksgiving for the King’s survival and has evolved into an annual night of fireworks and community gatherings.

Bonfire Night originally had religious undertones, reflecting the tensions between Catholics and Protestants in the early 1600s. Today, however, it’s a secular celebration, enjoyed by people of all backgrounds as a cultural and historical event rather than a religious one.

The main Bonfire Night fireworks in Plymouth take place on The Hoe, offering spectacular views over Plymouth Sound. You can also often see smaller local displays in nearby areas such as Plympton, Plymstock, and Saltash, but The Hoe event is the biggest and most popular.
