Top Tips for Planning an Epic New Year’s Eve Proposal

Thinking of getting down on one knee for a New Year’s Eve proposal? Obviously, you want your engagement to be epic in every single way. There’s no better way to ring in the new year than with a new ring, so we say go for it. We’ve got a few tips you need to know.

Certain times of the year are as perfect for proposing, such as New Year’s Eve. Not only is the air still full of Christmassy magic, but the sky is full of fireworks, and everyone is looking ahead to the future. So, if you’re thinking about getting one of your knees dirty anytime soon, the perfect proposal doesn’t have to be show-stopping or expensive, it just has to be thoughtful, personal and heartfelt.

Tips for planning an epic New Year’s Eve proposal

Make it an event

How about planning your own event? That way, you can control the guest list, the soundtrack and all the moments leading up to the engagement. The only exception to this rule is if you get down on one knee at a close friend or family member’s bash and get them in on your plan way in advance (you don’t want to steal the spotlight without getting the green light from them first!).

Have the moment prepped perfectly

You’ll want to know exactly what you’re going to do and say when you pop the question, so hash out your plans well in advance. Remember, unless you’ve put together a super intimate celebration, you’re probably going to have to work around an entire party. If you want you and your partner to be the centre of attention, you may want to have a stage and a mic at the ready so that everyone can see and hear what’s going on.

Get your party guests involved

You don’t want your marriage proposal to be overshadowed by other party guest’s shenanigans, so get them in on the surprise. If you’re worried that someone will let the news slip, simply tell them “you’ve got something important planned” for a specific time and place at the party.

Timing is everything

As with any engagement, timing is everything, but this is especially important for a New Year’s Eve proposal. While the obvious choice is midnight, some of your guests may try to steal the spotlight or be too caught up in their own plans to pay attention. Unless you’ve told everyone ahead of time, you might want to pull out the engagement ring and drop down on one knee right after your NYE kiss to make it all about you and your partner.

Choose the right place

If an event with friends and family is not on the cards, picking the right proposal place is essential. Taking them back to the place where you first met is equally charming. Consider where you had your first kiss, a favourite restaurant or somewhere you often visit with lots of memories. What you’re looking for is a romantic atmosphere. Take your partner away from the crowds and create a moment just for you.

A dinner date

A restaurant can be a lovely New Year’s Eve proposal setting. Make it more magical by choosing a place you visited with your partner on a meaningful early date. Pop in beforehand to ask the manager to help you make it perfect. If you feel you’re going to get nervous, sort a lovely table in a quiet corner, and perhaps plenty of prosecco. Maybe you can even propose before you go? That way, you can relax and spend the meal happily discussing plans for your big day.

Dinner at home

Creating a memorable proposal at home is all about creating a romantic setting. Cook a meal you know your partner loves (or get a friend to help you), but make sure it’s something simple that doesn’t need lots of last-minute attention. Focus on dressing the room and the table. Candles, flowers, rose petals, “your song” playing softly in the background – it all helps to create a memorable atmosphere.

Propose online

This kind of proposal is becoming more and more popular. If you’re thinking about popping the question on New Year’s Eve, the excellent news is that you still have time to get organised. Some talented webmasters create whole sites devoted to asking their partner to marry them and sneakily use a webcam to record their partner’s face as they read the site. If you like the idea of this route, think about creating a music video of photographs set to a song your partner loves and upload it to YouTube, finishing with the question “Will you marry me?” If you met online, you could include extracts from your partner's online dating profile that you loved or emails you exchanged to help tell the story of how you fell for one another.

Midnight

Above all else, remember that the countdown to the new year is the loveliest moment of New Year’s Eve so capitalise on it. As everyone counts down the last seconds of 2019, grab your partner and list the top 3 reasons why you love them. On the stroke of midnight, propose. It’s simple and sweet – and perfect.

Celebrate after the party

While a New Year’s Eve proposal is pretty epic, you probably won’t get a lot of alone time to celebrate your new relationship status the night of. Make sure to plan a separate, one-on-one event when the new year rolls around (and any potential hangovers subside) so that you can really bask in it. A fancy dinner out, a staycation in a hotel or a trip to a cottage to celebrate your engagement is well deserved for such a momentous occasion.
