An uplifting tale set in a 1950s Welsh Valleys community. After a mining disaster, a group of Welsh miners reforms their Male Voice Choir to lift spirits and raise the roof! Led by their heroic Chorus Master and supported by strong-willed women, they embark on a musical journey, kidnapping a yodeller, joining a trans-Atlantic link-up with Paul Robeson, and blazing a trail to the Eisteddfodau.

The Flying Dutchman

Thursday 16 April and Sunday 19 April 2026

Wales Millennium Centre

A ghostly ship roams the endless sea, and its cursed captain doomed to sail forever - until true love sets him free.

Captivated by his legend, Senta becomes his only hope for salvation. Her longing for escape entwines their fates in ways neither could foresee. This gripping reimagining of The Flying Dutchman explores loneliness, longing, and the fragile hope of connection. Inspired by the Welsh coast, the sea is both a compulsion and a prison. From the thunderous overture to haunting arias, Wagner’s score surges like the ocean itself, pulling you into its spell.

Sail the high seas with our interactive family show, where Captain Tom Redmond, stranded on a desert island, is joined by his trusty crew of WNO Orchestra and singers. Together, they’ll guide you through the orchestra’s many instruments, taking you on a journey filled with melodies, swashbuckling music, and beloved tunes from stage and screen.

Shipwrecked

In 1943, the Welsh National Opera was founded by a group of people from across South Wales, including miners, teachers and doctors. They wanted to forge an opera company befitting Wales’ rich reputation as the ‘land of song’. The energy which drives the Company today is rooted in its formation in the 1940s.

It has been described by The New York Times as "one of the finest operatic ensembles in Europe". The orchestra tours the world, giving more than 120 music and arts performances annually, with a repertoire of eight operas each year, to a combined audience of more than 150,000 people. Here in Cardiff, performances are predominately at the Wales Millennium Centre building, as well as St David's Hall and The New Theatre.

Tickets for WNO opera performances in Cardiff can be booked by contacting Wales Millennium Centre’s ticket office on 029 2063 6464 or visiting wmc.org.uk
