Fun things to do in Cardiff for couples

We have compiled a list of the top 10 things for couples to do in Cardiff. Cardiff is hard to beat for couples looking to take a romantic break - there's the natural beauty of the waterfront, large green spaces, and plenty of things to see and do. We promise a combination of fun, thoughtfulness and creativity.

1. Share Dessert at Coco Gelato

Coco Gelato has a fantastic array of spectacular desserts – why not choose one of their huge sundaes with two spoons and get stuck in. If you like to keep your food romantic, we suggest you try The Ron Burgundy which consists of Mascarpone Gelato, Raspberry and Red Velvet Gelato, White Chocolate Gelato, Red Velvet Cake Pieces and so much more.

2. Go to a quirky cinema

If you're a little quirky and like the arty things in life then you should definitely take a trip to the Chapter Arts Centre to watch an indie film in their truly retro cinema. They show 12 exhibitions, 2000 cinema screenings, 600 theatre performances alongside workshops, classes, talks, and events throughout the year.

At Everyman Cinema, there are the latest blockbuster releases, independent films and cult classics to see. Prepare to swap your soft drink for a glass of wine and a slice of freshly made pizza, served right to your seat - which is a big squashy armchair.

3. Shop at the Street markets for ingredients for a homemade meal

Perhaps you would like to cook for your partner and show off your culinary skills. To get the ingredients for your romantic dinner, we suggest visiting one of Cardiff's street markets. Riverside, Roath and Rhiwbina are good options.

If cooking isn't your thing, then visit one of the street food venues. Foodies in Cardiff rave about the local weekly pop-ups, where you can indulge. The bar Sticky Fingers has 5 different local vendors every Thursday to Sunday. Street Food Socials at The Depot or Tiger Yard both within walking distance from the hotel - are popular hangouts. Check out their weekly events too.

The Shipyard at GoodSheds in nearby Barry has a variety of offerings. Over 20 independents serve food and drinks from repurposed shipping containers. Also, The Corp Yard in Canton. The outdoor garden is colourfully decorated. Sit down, enjoy the atmosphere and eat up.

4. Hire bikes

Cycling is an excellent way to explore the city. Bring your bikes to Cardiff and keep them in your hotel bedroom - we are a cycle-friendly hotel. Or borrow a bike and lock up it outside on our dedicated Future Inn Cycle Rack. Try Pedal Power who have regular and adapted bikes. We suggest you explore the parks and cycle out of town to Llandaff, Castell Coch or Penarth for extra explorer points.

5. Get cultural at the National Museum of Wales

You will not be short of things to do in the National Museum of Wales. There's always plenty to see and do, whatever your interests. Personally, we recommend the Evolution of Wales exhibition, where you can travel through time - there's even a woolly mammoth.

Or discover the history of Cardiff through film, photographs, stories and objects, and learn how Cardiff grew from a small market town to the capital city it is today. The Cardiff Story Museum is free and features numerous interactive galleries. It is located in the Old Library building.

6. Feed the ducks, swans and geese in Roath Park

Roath Park, gardens and lake are recognised as one of the most beautiful late Victorian parks in Britain. Previously, visitors would have taken a leftover loaf and thrown the bread to the ducks. However, we are now encouraged to feed them sweetcorn or peas, ripped-up lettuce, oats, flapjacks or porridge, seeds or rice. Keep an eye out for all of the cute dogs, and seriously there are lots!

7. Row, row, row your boat

Whilst you are visiting Roath Park, you could hire a rowing boat and experience the water and its beautiful surroundings as the Victorians did. Or choose a pedalo, and sail around the beautiful lake. Watch out for the swans!

If you do want to get out on the water, Flat Holm is a small island just 4 miles off the coast of Cardiff. Pre-organised boat trips are arranged by Bay Island Voyages for up to 3 hours, depending on the tide times, giving you a unique opportunity to see the conservation, wildlife and historic buildings.

8. Stroll along Penarth Pier

Penarth Pier is located on the other side of Cardiff Bay. Take a stroll along the promenade and beachfront. Share a romantic bag of chips on the front, or eat ice creams on the beach.

9. Find the secret bar

Do you and your partner like sampling top-class cocktails? If so, you should most definitely track down The Dead Canary. The cocktails are both strong and exquisitely made. Good luck finding the bar though, it is deliberately hard to find...we will give you a clue, it is located on Barrack Lane.

10. Build trust at Boulders

Belay for one another as you climb the boulders and walls in Boulders Cardiff. There are over 2000 square metres of climbing surfaces, including horizontal and angled walls, leading to hours of adventuring.
